Carl Zigrosser took a personal interest in the career of Kuei T'eng, showing his work at the Weyhe Gallery and introducing him into his circle of artist friends. T'eng's american letters to Zigrosser mention the Yenching Institute, his work at Harvard, the progress of his work, cooking and entertaining for American friends, lectures and commissions, and a proposal to the Carnegie Corporation for an exhibition of contemporary Chinese arts and crafts. People mentioned in these letters include George C. Miller, Edith Gregor Halpert, Mabel Dwight, Mark Tobey, Helen Haskell and Douglas Haskell. Kuei T'eng's letters from much of 1931-32 are written from a tour of Europe. Included in this file is a schedule for the trip, and letters giving T'eng's impressions and experiences in England (where he was looked after by Leon Underwood, but still robbed of all of his money), France (staying in the studio of Heinz and Jessie Warneke, meeting Walter Pach), Spain, Germany, Italy, and home to China via India. The letters from China written by Kuei T'eng from 1932 to 1952 give a first-hand account of life, politics, and economics in China during that time of turmoil. Other topics covered in his letters includ T'eng's domestic life, his teaching and commissions, meeting Thomas Handforth, the coming of World War II, film making, a visit from Mark Tobey, interest in publishing books, plans for refugee aid, the splitting-up of his family during the war, efforts to emigrate, and the Mao revolution. Included are photographs of Kuei T'eng and his family, exhibition catalogs, clippings, a brief biography, and the texts for books written by Kuei T'eng.
